Waka Waka

Shakira's Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) song was a huge hit during the 2010 World Cup. This song is very interesting as it has become the anthem for the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament. You may have heard it's inspirational melodies, catchy choruses, and moving lyrics, but I'm certain that you have not heard one lyric mentioning soccer. This song illustrates a soldier preparing to go into battle, using his support as fuel to fight 'til the end. Shakira incorporates this illustration into the soccer match where two nations are fighting for their people to bring home the victory. Shakira uses this metaphor to send a message to the world that we are all humans and we all have reason to believe in our selves but most importantly help those who don't. Columbia has had a difficult history when they were victims of neo colonialism. Neocolonialism means the unjust involvement of the powerful countries in the affairs of less powerful countries. The Panama Canal was part of Columbia but was cut off so that the US can have control and carry out the project. The African continent who has always been oppressed and used by other powerful countries has had a very harsh and sad history. The African continent keeps struggling while other countries prosper off of them. Shakira wanted to shine some light on this issue and support those countries that are fighting to compete and empower themselves to be a part of this world, and if not for those individuals who have a vision to not give up and leap over the hurdles of oppression and negativity. "Today's your day I feel it, You paved the way Believe it". Shakira - Waka Waka Lyrics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRpeEdMmmQ0
